Hello, friends! Happy Thursday! As we head into a humbling and overwhelming remembrance of CHRIST's crucifixion, here are some mediations.
"But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber." John 18:39-40
"Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus," - John 19:14-16
“I know I've done my wrong 'cause doin' wrong is somethin' I do well
I know the court of law and somethin' like this doesn't ring a bell …
39 of all them lashes should have been on my own skin
How can it be?
How can it be? Oh
I am Barabbas, You took upon my cross
I was a prisoner 'til You bought my bond with blood
And I can't run away from what my accusers say
'Cause I am Barabbas”
- I am Barabbas by Josiah Queen
Before I heard the song, "I am Barabbas," I never thought about it that way specifically. Putting ourselves in the crowd who shouted to crucify JESUS, is something I heard many years ago. But, I love the image of us being Barabbas. It shows the beauty of the gospel so well. When we think of ourself as being Barabbas, it shows that we are sinful criminals; but JESUS, HE took our place and bore our punishment and the wrath of GOD was satisfied on HIM.
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’” -Galatians 3:13
Whenever I posture my heart to mediate on the Gospel and JESUS' sacrifice, my heart gets heavy with my overwhelming unworthiness of HIS love, mercy, and grace.
“Our sins they are many, HIS mercy is more.”
("His Mercy Is More" by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa)
And to close, even though we need to meditate on HIS death, we need not stay there because we have a relationship with the LORD of all who is alive!!
“We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.” - Romans 6:9-10
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” - 1 Peter 1:3
LORD willing, see you all for our next cup of coffee together!

Sabina, I appreciate your emphasis on Scripture in all your posts. And your occasional use of songs and quotes is helpful too. But what I also find edifying are your personal comments. Again, thank you. Blessings
ReplyDeleteWow! I’ve never thought of the perspective of being Barabbas. It’s so easy to look badly on the people there, but we are no different until Jesus changes us. “Our sins they are many, HIS mercy is more.” I love that!
ReplyDeleteIncredibly powerful reflection. Something needed to hear!
