Still Brewing: Coffee #13

Hello, friends! Happy Thursday! Today I just have a short note from my study Bible reading.

"Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright." - Genesis 25:34

"See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal." - Hebrews 12:15-16

I never really thought much on why Esau hated his birthright. But when I was reading the ESV Study Bible, the note on Genesis 25:34 really stuck out to me. Esau despised his birthright since he did not like that it was linked to GOD's plan of redemption for the world.

The pride of wanting your name to be seen and known. What a sad thing that Esau hated his birthright. This is what pride can do in our own lives. Two songs popped in my head (both by Casting Crowns) after I read this.

"And I-I-I, I don't want to leave a legacy
I don't care if they remember me
Only JESUS

And I-I-I, I've only got one life to live
I'll let every second point to Him
Only JESUS
"
- Only JESUS by Casting Crowns

"Cause I'm just a nobody
trying to tell everybody,
all about Somebody,
who saved my soul.
Ever since You rescued me,
You gave my heart a song to sing,
I'm living for the world to see,
nobody but JESUS"
- Only JESUS by Casting Crowns

I want my heart to be stripped of all pride that it doesn't matter if I'm known or remembered; only JESUS!

Something to note is the pride the other direction as well, where I fall into. I want to be in the shadows and not known, but to put the spotlight onto others. But, this easily leads into the pride of inferiority which is just as dangerous.

Let us look to JESUS, who is the perfecter of our faith being the perfect Lamb, and elevate HIS Name first and foremost!

"Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." - Hebrews 12:2

"He must increase, but I must decrease." - John 3:30

LORD willing, see you all for our next cup of coffee together!

  1. Now you've gone to meddling young lady. You've discovered my besetting sin - Pride! And I'm glad you did. I'll probably be battling it to the end. And, at the end, while on my death bed, someone leans down to hear some profound last words from me I'll be worried about whether my breath is fresh or not. Yuck!
